How to Delete or Remove a Slack Workspace (Desktop & Mobile)

To delete a Slack workspace, its Primary Owner must open Admin → Workspace settings → Delete Workspace on desktop and confirm deletion. This permanently deletes the workspace for everyone. If you only want it off your own app, sign out instead.

Choose the action you need:

Remove, leave, or delete: which one do you want?

It comes down to three actions that Slack keeps in three separate spots. Removing a workspace only clears it off your app, leaving deactivates your account on it, and deleting wipes the entire workspace for everyone. Here's the quick version:

Remove a Slack workspace from your app

This is what most people are actually looking for. You're not part of the org anymore, or you never really were, and you just want the icon gone from your sidebar. Removing it doesn't touch your membership and doesn't affect anyone else — and if you change your mind, signing back in brings it right back.

On desktop (Windows or Mac)

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + S (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + S (Windows/Linux) to pin the workspace switcher down the left edge, so every workspace you've added stays visible.
  2. Sign out of the one you're clearing: click its name at the top of the window, then Sign out. You can't remove a workspace you're still signed into — Slack will only offer you "Copy."
  3. Back in the switcher, right-click (Control-click on Mac) the workspace's icon. A signed-out workspace usually shows a small yellow warning triangle; right-click that if the icon itself doesn't give you a menu.
  4. If the signed-out workspace remains in the switcher and the menu offers Remove Workspace, select it.

The extra switcher cleanup varies by app version. If you don't see Remove Workspace, signing out is still the documented way to end your session; it does not deactivate your membership. See Slack's sign-out instructions.

On the web (app.slack.com)

There's no remove button in the browser. Sign out (click your workspace name, then Sign out), and if you want a genuinely clean slate, clear your Slack.com cookies and sign back into only the workspaces you care about.

On a phone? Jump to removing or leaving a workspace on mobile.

Leave a Slack workspace you joined

Removing a workspace from your app is cosmetic — you're still on the org's member list. If you're done for good (you left the company, or the community fizzled out), you need to actually leave, which in Slack means deactivating your own account on that specific workspace.

  1. Open your account page in a browser: go to your workspace URL followed by /account/settings — for example, yourteam.slack.com/account/settings — or visit my.slack.com/account and choose the workspace.
  2. Scroll down to Deactivate account.
  3. Click Deactivate your account, enter your password, then confirm with Yes, deactivate my account.

A few situations where you won't see the option:

Your messages and files stay put after you leave, so delete anything sensitive beforehand if you'd rather it didn't. And you can't undo this yourself — getting back in means a Workspace Owner or Admin reactivates your account. Slack spells out the same process in its deactivate-your-account guide.

Trying to remove someone else rather than yourself? That's an admin job — see how to remove someone from a Slack workspace.

Delete a Slack workspace you own

Deleting is permanent. It permanently erases every message, file, and channel for everyone in the workspace, not just you, and there's no undo. Only the workspace's Primary Owner can do it, and only from a computer — there's no delete button in the mobile app.

Before you start, export the data you need to retain. Once the workspace is gone, it cannot be recovered.

  1. Open Admin in the desktop sidebar, then Workspace settings.
  2. Scroll to the very bottom, to the Delete Workspace section.
  3. Click Delete Workspace.
  4. Tick the confirmation box, enter your Slack password, and click Yes, delete my workspace.

Signed in with SSO and never set a Slack password? Reset it first so you've got one to type in. Slack's own delete-a-workspace article covers the same steps.

Deleting an old Slack workspace from workspace settings

If your goal is to stop paying, review a downgrade separately from deletion. A free workspace has message-history and retention limits; do not assume downgrading preserves permanent access to all past messages. Export what you need first and check Slack's free-plan limits.

Remove or leave a workspace on your phone

The Slack mobile app can sign you out of a workspace, but it can't delete one — owner deletion lives on desktop and web only. Here's what you can do from your phone.

Sign out (iPhone and Android)

  1. On the Home tab, swipe right to open your workspace list.
  2. Tap the three-dots icon next to the workspace you want gone.
  3. Tap Sign out, then confirm.

The steps are identical on iOS and Android, and Slack documents them in its sign-out guide.

Leaving or deleting from a phone

To leave a workspace for good, open your account page in your phone's browser (yourteam.slack.com/account/settings) and deactivate your account there — the app itself has no button for it. To delete a workspace you own, you'll need a computer; it can't be done from the app at all.

Keeping a Slack workspace from going quiet

If you are keeping the workspace, decide which channels still have a purpose and who will maintain them. For a team that wants to make appreciation more regular, see employee recognition in Slack. Cleaning up unused workspaces and improving an active team's habits are separate tasks; finish the account changes you came here for first.

Common questions about Slack workspaces

The edge cases that come up most often when people are cleaning up their Slack — deleting on mobile, closing without wiping, and who's actually allowed to do what.

Can you delete a Slack workspace you didn't create?

Only the workspace's Primary Owner can delete it, and that's not something a regular member or even a second owner can override. If the current Primary Owner has moved on, they can transfer ownership to you first, and then you're able to delete it. If you only want out yourself, leave the workspace by deactivating your account instead.

How do you delete a Slack workspace on iPhone or Android?

You can't. The delete option only exists on the desktop app and the web, and it's limited to the workspace's Primary Owner. From your phone you can sign out of a workspace, or open your Slack account page in a mobile browser to leave one, but removing the whole workspace has to happen on a computer.

What happens when you delete a Slack workspace?

Everything goes. Every message, file, and channel is permanently erased for every member, and Slack can't bring it back once it's done. That's why it's worth exporting your data first, and why the action is reserved for the Primary Owner. Because the workspace no longer exists afterward, there's nothing left on the plan for Slack to bill.

How do you close a Slack workspace without deleting it?

There's no "close" or "archive" switch for a whole workspace — Slack only lets you archive individual channels, not the workspace itself. If you want to mothball one without wiping it, you've got two realistic options: review a downgrade to the free plan, subject to its history and retention limits, or keep the workspace inactive with an owner responsible for it. Deleting is the only way to actually remove it.

How do you leave a Slack workspace permanently?

Deactivate your own account on that workspace from your account page (yourteam.slack.com/account/settings, then Deactivate account). That takes you off the member roster and signs you out everywhere, and it sticks — the only way back in is for a Workspace Owner or Admin to reactivate you. Removing the workspace from your app, on the other hand, doesn't make you leave; you stay a member until you deactivate.
