Getting started
How do I add Asante Bot to my private channel?
Private channels work a little differently from public ones — Asante Bot has to be invited from inside the channel by a member, because it can’t discover or join private channels on its own. Here’s how to add it…
Asante Bot works only in channels it has been invited to. Private channels work a little differently from public ones: because Slack hides private channels from apps that aren’t already members, Asante Bot can’t discover or join a private channel on its own. Someone who is already in the channel has to invite it from inside.
Once it’s added, Asante Bot behaves exactly the same as in any public channel — Points, leaderboards, and celebrations all work normally.
Before you start
- You need to be a member of the private channel. If you can’t see the channel in Slack, ask an existing member to add the bot instead.
- Asante Bot must already be installed in your Slack workspace. If it isn’t, add it to Slack first, then come back to this step.
How to add Asante Bot to a private channel
- Open the private channel you want to add Asante Bot to.
- In the message box, type /invite and select Add apps to this channel.
- Find Asante Bot in the list of apps and click Add.
- You’ll see a confirmation message in the channel once Asante Bot has been added successfully.
That’s it — Asante Bot can now read and post in the private channel, so your team can give Points and recognition there just like anywhere else.
Tip: You can also open the channel details, go to the Integrations tab, and choose Add an App to invite Asante Bot without typing a command.
Public vs private channels — what changes?
| Public channel | Private channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Bot can be found by name | ✅ Yes | ❌ No — must be invited from inside |
| Who can add the bot | Any member | An existing member of the channel |
| Recognition, Points & leaderboards | ✅ Works | ✅ Works |
The only real difference is how Asante Bot gets in. Everything it does once it’s there is identical.
Prefer to keep recognition off-channel?
If you want to recognize a teammate without posting in any channel — public or private — you can send Private Kudos Points directly in Slack. It’s a one-to-one way to share appreciation discreetly while still counting toward recognition analytics.
