Getting started

Add Asante to your Slack workspace

What happens when you install Asante Bot in Slack: who can install it, the OAuth scopes it asks for, and what to do if your workspace requires admin approval.

Installing Asante is a single click for a Slack workspace admin. This page walks through what happens during the install, what Slack will ask for, and what to do if your workspace requires admin approval for apps.

Who can install Asante

Any Slack workspace owner or admin can install Asante. If you're not an admin, you can still request the install from your admin via Slack's app directory — they'll get a notification and one-click approve.

The install flow

  1. From the Asante site, click Add to Slack.
  2. Slack opens its OAuth consent screen and asks you to confirm:
    • The workspace you're installing into.
    • The scopes Asante is requesting (see below).
  3. Click Allow. Slack redirects you back to Asante's setup wizard.

The wizard then walks through choosing your recognition emoji, picking channels, and inviting teammates. See Steps to make Asante Bot work for the full day-one checklist.

What scopes Asante asks for

Asante asks for the minimum scopes needed to run recognition in Slack:

  • chat:write — to post kudos and weekly summaries in your chosen channels.
  • channels:history — to read messages in channels you invite it to (so it can detect recognition emoji).
  • users:read — to know who's in your workspace.
  • commands — to register the /kudos slash command.

Asante never asks for permission to read DMs, private channels, or files — channels:history covers public channels only, which is why Asante can't work in private channels. See the privacy policy for the full data handling details.

If your workspace requires admin approval

Some workspaces require an admin to approve every new app. If that's you:

  1. Click Add to Slack — you'll see Slack's "this app needs admin approval" screen.
  2. Slack will notify your workspace admins automatically. Add a short note explaining why you want Asante.
  3. Once approved, you'll receive a Slack DM and can finish the install.

Reinstalling

Re-installing is safe — your kudos history, leaderboards, and rewards are tied to your workspace ID, not the OAuth session. If you need to refresh permissions, just run Add to Slack again from the install guide.
